I think organic searches is the best way to bring in work. Getting to the front page of google is a good aim. The area I am looking at is the area me and my girlfriend are moving to shortly. It is in the UK and is a Cathedral City if that is any help. The goal of the research was to see the potential of the location. The problem with the internet is that you are competing with thousands of developers from a vast number of countries. Gaining visibility amongst such a large number of developers is difficult. It is smarter to look at what is around you. If there is a small city down the road it makes far more sense to target local businesses. Here you may have a handful of direct competitors instead of tens of thousands. This seems like a much simpler way to work. It also means the race to the top of Google is pretty much irrelevant. If the place I was moving to didn't have such great potential for local business then I would need to change my marketting strategy. I would spend most of my money running advert's in business start up magazines and attending business conferences. The easiest way to sell a website is face to face. The question at the moment is how we are best going to reach the local businesses and this is something we are continuing to investigate.
