Returning… Again

coding

How time flies. It has been a rather epic 8 months since my last post and I am finally about to get back into the swing of things.

I have finally been prodded back into action after my blog mysteriously went a little funny. The previous theme disappeared. Now, this was probably down to user error. When I clean my server I do get a little gung ho and I fear that I may have mean a little too liberal with the delete button.

If you combine the stupidity of wiping your blog theme with the fact that I use 3 computers, each with individual back up mechanisms. It fairly quickly becomes obvious that the theme named ‘default’ is nigh on impossible to find.

So, already on my break from blogging I have learned 2 rather important things. Do not delete themes you are using. Secondly, do not call your theme ‘default’. This new theme is called starkers… another stupid name. It shall be changed soon (probably).

Fortunately, about 4 months ago I had a blog revival idea. I created a design and even mocked it up. Today, I spent an hour converting my mock up into a WordPress theme. Time well spent I think. The blog is looking pretty spiffy.

A couple of notes though. The barline… needs to be improved. Unfortunately whatever part of me producing wit is not functioning today so the barline will have to do.

Secondly. This theme has only been tested in Firefox. If you are using anything else and are experiencing problems. Come back next week. I am sure it will be fixed (probably)*.

Rambling Aside

I enjoy writing and I enjoy updating my blog. Alas, sometimes things get in the way. Work, moving house, trying to master Guitar Hero.. I could go on. This time I am prepared. I have a number of half finished posts. I have a good idea about what I want to write about and most importantly I have a slot in my iCal calender where work stops and blog writing happens.

With the motivation to write again furiously burning inside me you can expect some decent blog posts, which hopefully ramble a little less than this one, appearing shortly.

Before I go. A note on the picture that goes with this post. I know it bears no relevance to the post. What I planned to write I didn’t. The picture I was looking for I couldn’t find. I shall improve, I promise. Also comments are buggered. Its what happens when you don’t get round to styling them. This will definitely be amended.

* I mean honestly… should I really test the theme? If you are using Firefox, Opera, Safari, IE8, Chrome. Then there is a pretty excellent chance everything will be displaying perfectly. If you are using a browser that has trouble rendering a 138 line style sheet then it really is time to upgrade.

Website MOT

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Once a year your car is taken in for an MOT. Its a minor thing, just a trained mechanic looking under the hood to make sure that everything is still operating correctly. Issues are identified and remedied. The car is safe to use. In today’s web environment where many sites store user information surely it is more important than ever that a similar system is created to monitor the health of a website.

As a result I have been thinking, its about time that a website MOT was introduced. This is for the following reasons.

  1. Security
  2. Helps inform other developers about the website
  3. Allows site owners who know nothing about their websites have a means of translating information
  4. Allows site owners to keep a website up to date.

I would like to begin this by talking about these 4 points in a little bit more detail.
